Newell impressed by striker's efforts in pre-season

Grimsby Town boss Mike Newell has confirmed he is ready to offer teenage striker Chris Jones a contract. Jones has been training with the Mariners after being released by Swansea City and has caught Newell's eye. He impressed against Belgian side RRFC Montegnee earlier in the week and Newell is set to offer the Welshman a deal. Newell said: "I've seen enough to think he's got something and I think we'll be looking at taking a chance with him. "Chris was really lively on Wednesday in the first half and he impressed me. It wasn't easy coming into a side that chopped and changed but he did well." Meanwhile, former Luton defender Sol Davis is currently training with the Mariners and featured in Friday's friendly win over Yeovil Town.
