Tranmere Rovers striker Bas Savage admits he is unsure when he will be ready to return from an Achilles injury.
Savage scored nine goals for Rovers last season following his arrival from Millwall, but missed the final two games of the campaign due to injury.
He is making progress in his recovery, but the 27-year-old concedes he may not be fit enough to feature in the early stages of pre-season training.
"It's getting there," Savage told the club's official website. "It's healing slowly but surely. I'm out of a cast now and I'm walking again.
"I'm not sure when I'll be able to run yet. It's too early to say whether I'll be able to be involved in pre-season or not.
"It's been a miserable summer because I've been injured. I'm itching to get back and return to fitness."
Savage also revealed he is looking forward to playing under the new management team at Prenton Park of John Barnes and Jason McAteer.
He added: "It's exciting with new management coming in. A few players have left and there will be new ones arriving so there will be changes from last season. We've got to look to improve on last season and get promotion.
"John Barnes is a legend and he and Jason both played at the highest level, so it will be interesting to work with them."
