Sean Gregan has left Oldham Athletic after being informed he is not to be offered fresh terms at the League One club.
New Latics boss Dave Penney has wasted little time in shaping his Oldham squad having deemed club captain Gregan to be surplus to requirements at Boundary Park.
Gregan has been a popular figure in the North West since joining the club from Leeds United in 2007 but Penney - going against the recommendation of departing temporary boss Joe Royle - has decided against extending his stay.
He does not envisage any problems for Gregan in finding a new club though, as the veteran stopper looks to extend a career that has taken in spells at Darlington, Preston, West Brom, Leeds and Oldham.
"I sat down with Sean this morning and his contract will not be renewed this summer," Penny told the club's official website.
"Sean is a great professional and I am sure he will soon find another club. We wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his sterling service to this club."
