Michael Nelson is poised to leave Hartlepool on a free transfer, skysports.com understands.

The 27-year-old's contract at Victoria Park expires in the summer and he is set to move on to pastures new.

Nelson has established himself as a key member of the Hartlepool side since his arrival from Bury in 2003 and his departure will comes as a big blow to the League One side.

A number of clubs are believed to be tracking the tough-tackling centre-half with Nelson regarded as one of the best defenders in the lower leagues.

Nelson's agent, Clive Hart, has confirmed the player is set to leave Hartlepool and is open to offers.

"Michael is out of contract in the summer and he is free to leave Hartlepool," Hart told skysports.com.

"Michael is open to offers and we will see what comes in before making a decision on his future."
