Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson is hoping to convince Danny Woodards to pen a new deal with the club.
The defender, who has impressed as a holding midfielder of late, is set to be out of contract in the summer.
Woodards is reluctant to discuss his future at present, though, with it still unclear whether the Railwaymen will be playing in League One or League Two next season.
Thordarson understands that he will have to be patient in his efforts to keep the 25-year-old at Gresty Road, but he is optimistic that the former Exeter man can be persuaded to extend his stay.
"I have had a short discussion with Danny and I remain hopeful that he will want to stay with us beyond this season," the Icelandic coach told the club's official website.
"He is focused on his football at the moment and I appreciate that, especially with such vital games still to play, but I hope to conclude talks over the next few weeks and that he will stay with us."
