Abbott happy to secure midfield trio

Carlisle United have snapped up Michael Burns on a free transfer, while Paul Thirlwell and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson have signed new contracts. Former Liverpool and Bolton youngster Burns has been on trial with the League One club since the start of the month. He has now accepted an 18-month deal at Brunton Park and Carlisle boss Greg Abbott believes Burns deserves his chance. "Michael has done well and he fully deserves this contract offer," Abbott told the club's official website. "It's an opportunity for him and hopefully it is one that he is going to take and make the most of."

Vital

Meanwhile, Carlisle skipper Thirlwell and midfielder Bridge-Wilkinson have both agreed contract extensions through to 2011. Abbott said: "A fit Paul Thirlwell is vital to the way that we try to play. "I'm delighted that we have got his future with us sorted and that he will be with us for another two years at least. "Marc is a solid and dependable character who always gives everything when he goes out on to the pitch. "I think he is a really good signing and I am very pleased to be able to confirm that he is staying with us."
