Irish defender moves to Meadow Lane

Notts County have signed John Thompson on a one-month loan deal from Oldham. The Magpies were keen to strengthen their defensive options and view the Republic of Ireland defender as an ideal candidate. With Stephen Hunt, Jason Beardsley and Michael Johnson currently out of action, Ian McParland has moved quickly to bring in cover. Thompson, who has won three caps for Ireland and made over 100 appearances for city rivals Nottingham Forest prior to joining Oldham, is expected to go straight into County's squad for their League Two encounter with Macclesfield on Saturday.

Solid

"I've worked with John in the past and he is a terrific addition to our squad," McParland told the club's official website. "I'm grateful to John Sheridan and Oldham that we've been able to reach an agreement to get him here. "He is a solid defender, and at this moment in time we're a bit short on the ground at the back. "With two midweek games in a row coming up over the next fortnight it was always going to test the squad, so I felt it was best to get someone in who can do a job for us. John can certainly do that."
