Gillingham face a fight with a League One club to sign out-of-contract midfielder Kevin Maher.
The 31-year-old has been training with Gillingham during pre-season after being released by Southend United.
He spent two months on loan at Priestfield last term and Gills boss Mark Stimson is keen on a permanent deal.
However, Stimson has now confirmed that there is competition from a higher division, although Maher is expected to play in Tuesday's friendly against Stevenage.
"Kevin has got another club interested in him, but he's been honest with us, that's good and he's actually going to figure for us in the game," said Stimson.
"Hopefully by then we might be able to do something, but by still coming in and training with us it shows we've still got a chance.
"I know we're competing against a first division club, so it would be a good one if we could get him to sign."
Stimson is also waiting for striker Delroy Facey to reach an agreement to leave Gillingham before the start of the season.
He added: "Delroy's got a couple of clubs interested in him, so it's just a matter now of Del and the chairman trying to get together and deciding what's best for both parties and to maybe leave the club."
