Downing wants to bring midfielder back to Whaddon Road

Cheltenham Town boss Keith Downing is hoping to agree a permanent deal for Alex Russell. The veteran midfielder is available on a free transfer after being released by Bristol City earlier this week. Russell spent the second half of last season on loan at Cheltenham, scoring twice in 13 appearances for the League One club. He is currently considering his future, but Robins manager Downing hopes the 35-year-old will return to Whaddon Road. Downing told the Gloucestershire Echo: "Alex wants to keep his options open at this stage, which we have to respect, but I will be pursuing him and I'd like to sign him."
