Carlisle United fear captain Paul Thirlwell could be out for two months with a calf injury.

Thirlwell suffered the injury in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Port Vale and was replaced at half-time in the League One fixture.

He will undergo scans on the problem later in the week, but Carlisle boss John Ward is already pessimistic about the outcome.

The midfielder missed two months with a calf complaint earlier in the season and Ward fears his skipper's injury jinx has struck again.

"His calf is damaged and it's the same calf he had the problem with before," Ward told the News & Star.

"He was out for a while with it before, so I expect it will be for a similar time this time.

"Without knowing too much at this early stage, that is what it looks like."
