Crewe Alexandra striker Nicky Maynard will be out of action for at least three months.
Maynard broke his fibula during the first half of Crewe's 2-1 home win over Brighton in the opening game of the season on Saturday.
He will now face a prolonged spell on the sidelines, with technical director Dario Gradi confirming the injury.
"Nicky has fractured his fibula and will be out for a few months," Gradi told the club's official website.
"It is a huge disappointment for us and for him, but he will come again."
With Maynard injured, and Luke Varney having been sold over the summer, Gradi admits there is a need to sign a new striker.
He added: "Shaun Miller and Byron Moore are two talented lads, but we would not want to play them week in and week out, so we have a problem which needs to be addressed and we will look to conclude something this week."
