Bantams out to secure Williams

Bradford have offered Darren Williams a contract after he impressed while on trial.

Bradford City have offered Darren Williams a contract after the full-back impressed while on trial.

Williams is a former England Under 21 and was released by Hartlepool at the end of last season.

Bantams boss Stuart McCall is also trying to secure Nathan Joynes and Thomas Harban on long-term loans from Barnsley.

However, Simon Johnson, Kris Gate and Peter Leven have left the club after failing to secure a deal.

While McCall is yet to decide the fates of Scott Phelan and Kyle Nix, an announcement is expected on Monday afternoon.

Defender Matthew Clarke looks likely to miss the start of the new season after picking up a hamstring injury during the friendly against North Ferriby United.

"We don't really know yet how serious the problem is but I would think you are talking possibly four to six weeks," McCall told the Telegraph & Argus.

"I feel for the lad. He's acquitted himself well in the games so far and in training and there is nothing worse in pre-season when you want to build up your fitness."
