Smith teams up with Hatters

York midfielder Jonathan Smith has joined Blue Square Bet Premier side Luton on loan until January.

Smith, 26, has found it difficult to force his way back into York manager Gary Mills' starting line-up since being left out last month. Mills said prior to the FA Cup draw with AFC Wimbledon at the weekend that "two or three" of his fringe players needed to spend time out on loan as they were not currently doing enough to earn recalls. Smith returned to Bootham Crescent in the summer after spending a season at Swindon, where he was a regular in their npower League Two promotion campaign. But despite starting in the first 11 games for York this season, Smith has found himself on the substitutes' bench for the last nine matches. He will go straight into Luton's squad for Tuesday night's game at Hereford.
