Key defender set to sign new one-year deal

Garry Richards is set to prolong his stay with Gillingham as the club plot a promotion push back to League One. The centre-back has been offered fresh terms by new manager Andy Hessenthaler and is set to sign a one-year deal with the club later this week. The 24-year-old will have a key role to play next term as he has become an integral part of Gills' back four since joining from Southend in January 2008. Hessenthaler told the Kent Messenger: "I like him. He's got a great attitude towards the game and he's a player that will give us everything he's got." Meanwhile, released Gillingham midfielder Rashid Yussuff has joined Blue Square Premier club AFC Wimbledon on a free transfer. Yussuff, who is known as "Toks", was released in a major overhaul of the Gills' playing staff in May having spent just one season at Priestfield.
