LUTON TOWN boss Mike Newell has confirmed that striker Steve Howard will be fined for receiving a red card in the 2-0 defeat at Brighton on Bank Holiday Monday.

The former Northampton Town hit-man received his marching orders in the 56th minute for using foul and abusive language towards linesman Jarnail Singh and the boss was clearly angry at his player.

"I cannot accept that. We cannot afford suspensions and ill discipline," said the Hatters manager.

Bizarrely, Newell himself was dismissed in the 72nd minute after appearing to kick the ball, as Brighton's Nathan Jones was chasing it down the touchline.

Newell defended his action, saying: "The ball had gone out of play. I was just trying to stop it so that I could get the ball back into play.

"The ref said I stepped outside the technical area. There was nowhere for me to go, so I had to stand in the tunnel for the rest of the game."
