Sky Sports understands Southend are set to sign Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Michael Spillane.
The 23-year-old has impressed for Dagenham this season, netting five goals from midfield this term and Southend are keen to land him.
Southend boss Paul Sturrock is keen to bolster his squad during this month's transfer window and he is thought to be an admirer of Spillane.
Spillane's deal at Dagenham is due to expire at the end of the season and they have reluctantly agreed to offload him rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer.
The two clubs are thought to have agreed a fee for Spillane with the former Republic of Ireland Under 21 international set to undergo a medical at Roots Hall.
