Southend boss Paul Sturrock was happy to settle for a draw with Fleetwood afterthe sides' encounter at Highbury Stadium.
Shrimpers duo Anthony Straker and Gavin Tomlin both converted in the opening half, only to see their efforts ruled offside by referee Darren Deadman.
Steven Gillespie could have snatched it for new boss Graham Alexander's side late on, but his shot from nine yards sailed over the bar.
Sturrock was satisfied with the goalless draw, saying: "Maybe we weren't at the top of our game.
"We've created a few chances and then had to make some good saves as well - one at the end of the first half and two or three after the break.
"The exuberance of having a new manager showed in Fleetwood.
"It wasn't an easy place to come. We will have wanted the three, but we'll take the one."
