Sturrock hails strike pair

Paul Sturrock hailed Southend's strikers after they continued their scoring streaks to fire the Shrimpers to a 3-1 win over Rochdale.

Strike duo Gavin Tomlin and Britt Assombalonga were both on target in Saturday's League Two victory at Roots Hall to take their combined tally to eight goals in three games. Assombalonga struck first then Tomlin slotted the ball in to the bottom right-hand corner of the net from eight yards out before Assombalonga turned provider and teed up Marc Laird for the third. "The two of them are on fire at the moment and it's great to see," said Shrimpers boss Sturrock. "Gav has been quality for us all season but he's now getting rewarded with goals which is great to see. He's got five in the last week and has been class alongside Britt who just has no fear. "He's a young player who has a big future in the game and I'm delighted their latest goals helped us get back to winning ways at home because our results here in the league just recently hadn't been the best."
