Defender Pat Baldwin hopes to lead Southend to promotion after rejoining the club until the end of the season.
Baldwin, who joined from npower League One side Colchester on Friday, was on loan with the Shrimpers during the 2009/10 season when they were relegated to the fourth tier.
But Baldwin hopes to banish those memories by guiding Paul Sturrock's high-flying outfit back into League One.
"Southend have a very good squad and from speaking to Chris Barker, I understand there's a great team spirit here as well, so I'm confident we can go up this year," he told the Echo.
"I'd been here before and, on a personal level, I enjoyed it. It was a difficult period for the players though because of late payment of wages and that started to affect them on the pitch.
"But I'm grateful to have come back now and hopefully we can get the club back up in to League One again."
