Phillips in race against clock

Defender Mark Phillips says his involvement in Southend's crucial clash with Swindon next Tuesday is hanging in the balance.

Phillips was forced off with a groin injury in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury, but with no game this weekend is hoping he can recover in time for the meeting with Paolo Di Canio's high-flying Robins at Roots Hall. "The way the season is shaping up at the moment I don't think we've had a more important game than the one against Swindon, so of course I really want to play in it," he told the Echo. "In my mind I'm preparing for the game as usual, but whether or not it's realistic for me to expect to be able to play I don't know." Southend are also sweating on the fitness of midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala after he was forced off at the Greenhous Meadow due to a hamstring problem.
