Sturrock reveals Shrimpers' spur

Southend boss Paul Sturrock admitted last year's 3-1 defeat at Accrington provided the motivation for his side's 2-1 win.

Liam Dickinson opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first minute for Southend and Ryan Hall scored the winner in the 67th minute. In between Accrington's Andy Procter equalised on 40 minutes, while Stanley ended the game with 10 men with Kevin McIntyre sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. "Last season we came here and they trampled all over us," said Sturrock, as his side chalked up his first away win since January. "I did not want that to happen again and we responded properly. People were throwing their bodies in front of the ball and putting their bodies on the line and that's what we want if we are to churn out results."
