Southend are again assessing the fitness of Mark Phillips after the defender suffered another groin injury against Leyton Orient.

Phillips scored the equaliser in the Shrimpers' Carling Cup defeat before being forced off at half-time.

He has been plagued by injury problems since his arrival at Roots Hall and recently had surgery in a bid to resolve his groin problems.

"Mark felt something pop and had to come off," manager Paul Sturrock told the Echo.

"It's unfortunate because he had been playing very well but he just doesn't seem able to play four or five games in a row.

"We don't know how serious it is just yet but with Barks [Chris Barker] already out for at least two or three weeks with a grade one tear of his groin we don't want to be losing Mark for a long period of time either."
