Mooney is set to leave Reading this summer after the Irishman was informed he did not figure in Brian McDermott's first team plans.
The news has alerted a number of clubs to Mooney's availability with the striker catching the eye on loan at Charlton last season.
Charlton are believed to be weighing up a move to bring Mooney back to the Valley with Addicks boss Phil Parkinson a big admirer of the 25-year-old.
Huddersfield are also thought to be tracking Mooney with Terriers chief Lee Clark looking to bolster their attacking options before the start of the season.
