Contract for youngster, but Jack moves on

Johnny Herd has secured a new contract at Southend United, but goalkeeper Kelvin Jack has left the relegated club. Promising full-back Herd's previous deal expired this summer, but Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson has acted quickly to keep the youth-team graduate at Roots Hall. "There is a clause in Jonny's contract when he signed that had an option of another year in the club's favour." Tilson told the club's official website. "He's progressed since coming back into the side in the second half of the season and I want to keep him on for next year. "It is good to get that one sorted nice and early and we can now concentrate on renewing the other players we want to keep hold of." Meanwhile, Jack has left Southend after being informed he would not be offered a deal, having initially been drafted in as cover for first-choice keeper Steve Mildenhall in February on a non-contract basis.
