Steve Mildenhall has been boosted by the news that he did not suffer a fracture in Saturday's match with Hereford.
The Southend goalkeeper picked up an ankle problem in a collision with Matt Done but X-rays have shown that the damage was not as severe as initially feared.
It would appear as though Mildenhall has a badly sprained ankle, although he will have an MRI scan later on Monday to confirm the diagnosis.
"X-rays have shown that there isn't a fracture which is better than first thought," Mildenhall told the club's
official website.
"The doctor thinks I have severely sprained my ankle and I am going to have an MRI scan.
"It doesn't look good though as my ankle has ballooned up and I have been on crutches since the end of the match."
Pain
Mildenhall looked set to be substituted as he climbed onto the stretcher at one point, but with no goalkeeper on the bench he decided to play on for the final 20 minutes.
He said: "I was in a lot of pain but I just didn't want to come off and let the team down because we really needed the win."
Southend clung on for a 1-0 victory but manager Steve Tilson will now have to decide who could replace Mildenhall if he is ruled out for a period of time.
Ian Joyce and Clark Masters are both in contention to start between the posts against Crewe on Saturday.
