Southend United have confirmed they are appealing against the red card shown to Kevin Maher on Saturday.
The Shrimpers skipper was dismissed during the 3-0 defeat to local rivals Colchester following an off-the-ball incident involving Karl Duguid.
However, Steve Tilson's side are attempting to dodge a suspension for their captain by appealing to The Football Association.
A hearing has been scheduled for 2.30pm on Tuesday, and if The FA rule in favour of Maher then the Shrimpers star will be free to play against Barnsley later on in the day.
However, Maher will incur a three-match ban if the appeal is rejected by the game's governing body.
