Oldham boss Ronnie Moore has confirmed he is in the chase to sign Southend United's Wayne Gray.
The Shrimpers striker is out of contract at Roots Hall and is unlikely to figure prominently in Steve Tilson's plans next season with Championship football to prepare for.
Gray netted nine times as Southend won promotion from League One last term, and is attracting interest from a number of clubs looking to harness his pace.
Moore has now confirmed to the Oldham Chronicle that The Latics are one of "Six or seven" clubs hoping to snare Gray on a free transfer.
Oldham are also awaiting news on whether they will be able to secure Sheffield United striker Luke Beckett on a permanent deal after he scored 18 goals during a loan spell at Boundary Park last season.
Moore will be looking to forge a squad capable of promotion in the coming months and has also been linked with released Nottingham Forest man Gareth Taylor as he continues his summer recruitment drive.
