Shrimpers sign up Smith

Southend midfielder Jay Smith has signed a new one-year contract at Roots Hall.

Southend midfielder Jay Smith has signed a new one-year contract with The Championship-bound club.

Despite being unable to hold down a regular starting place at Roots Hall this past season, manager Steve Tilson believes the player still has much to offer his side.

And as The Shrimpers gear up for life in The Championship next season, Smith cannot wait to repay the club's faith.

"I'm delighted to have signed," said Smith. "I am looking forward to next season and playing in The Championship and hopefully I can get a few more games and do well for the club.

"Last year was frustrating as I don't like being a sub and I wanted to play every game. This year I'm looking to give it a real go.

"It's nice that the club have stuck by me and that the gaffer has shown faith in my ability. Hopefully this season I can show that because it's been annoying the last year with my injuries."

The Shrimpers are also optimistic of agreeing deals for Darryl Flahavan, Kevin Maher and Mark Gower.
