League Two strugglers Torquay United and Rushden & Diamonds needed penalties to see off non-league opposition to reach the FA Cup second round.

Leroy Rosenior's Gulls were thankful to goalkeeper Andy Marriott, as his sudden-death spot kick saw off brave Harrogate Town 6-5 on penalties following a goalless extra time draw.

A large and expectant crowd at the Conference North club's Wetherby Road ground saw a scrappy first round replay tie, with Danny Holland creating the best chances for the home side.

In the end, both sides failed to make a breakthrough to win the tie and the match went to a decisive penalty shoot-out.

With the shoot-out tied at 5-5, Harrogate's Leigh Wood saw his penalty saved by Marriott and the Torquay custodian followed that by scoring the next spot kick to set up a second round home tie with League Two rivals Notts County.

Rushden also needed sudden-death spot kicks after being held to a goalless draw by ten-man Halifax Town at Nene Park.

Despite Steven Haslam being sent off for a second bookable offence in extra time, The Shaymen held on for a penalty shoot-out.

With the shoot-out at 4-4, the Conference club could have won the tie with their fifth penalty, but Diamonds goalkeeper Jamie Young saved Denny Ingram's spot kick.

Phil Gulliver then scored his penalty for Rushden, but Halifax's Tyrone Thompson struck the ensuing spot kick over the crossbar to hand the home side a 5-4 win on penalties.

Rushden will now host either Leyton Orient or Chesterfield in the next round.

Scunthorpe United also needed extra time before seeing off a brave cup challenge from Chris Casper's Bury with a 1-0 home win.

Veteran striker Tommy Johnson scored the decisive goal deep into the second period of extra time for The Iron, as The Shakers had David Flitcroft sent off for foul and abusive language just before the end.

Brian Laws's side now face a tricky trip to Hampshire and Conference club Aldershot Town in round two.

Two goals from Clive Platt gave Milton Keynes Dons a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City at The National Hockey Stadium.

Platt broke the deadlock with his first goal on 14 minutes, but a Paul Mayo penalty restored parity for The Imps ten minutes later.

The former Walsall, Rochdale, Notts County and Peterborough United striker earned Danny Wilson's side a trip to Southend United with his second goal three minutes before half time.

Yeovil Town booked a second round trip to League One rivals Walsall after cruising past Macclesfield Town 4-0 at Huish Park.

Darren Way gave The Glovers a half time lead but it was not until the 73 minute mark before the Somerset club doubled their advantage through Paul Terry.

Lee Johnson made it three on 75 minutes before Arron Davies rounded off the scoring with a fourth goal in second half injury time.

Finally, Woking saw off Nationwide Conference rivals Southport with a 1-0 extra time home win.

Craig McAllister's goal on 114 minutes set Woking up for a second round home tie with Northwich Victoria.
