Southend moved to the top of League Two after a fine victory at Macclesfield.

The Shrimpers were indebted to on loan Preston striker Alan McCormack who fired a double to send them top of the pile.

The Essex-based outfit fell behind shortly before the half-hour mark when Macclesfield defender David Morley was on hand to fire home after a Jonathan Parkin free-kick had come back off the post.

The level were level just three minutes later, though, when McCormack cut in off the right and capped a fine run by firing home off keeper Steve Wilson for his first senior goal.

Both sides attempted to secure a winner in the second period, but it was McCormack who succeeded in the dying moments when he latched on to a Freddy Eastwood pass to stroke home.
