Southend beat Scunthorpe 4-2 to overtake them in the Division Three table after a six-goal thriller at Roots Hall.
The home side raced into a two-goal lead with quick-fire strikes from Leon Constantine (26) and Drewe Broughton (28).
Matthew Sparrow gave Scunthorpe hope pulling a goal back on the half hour, but Leon Cort restored the two-goal cushion five minutes before the break.
Scunthorpe refused to lie down and reduced the arrears again through Steve Torpey (49) soon after the restart.
Constantine finally made the game safe for Southend with his second and his side's fourth four minutes from time.
The defeat was the first for Scunthorpe caretaker boss Russ Wilcox, while Southend climb on four places to 13th place.
