Wignall waiting on trio

SOUTHEND UNITED boss Steve Wignall has revealed his hope that three of his players make decisions soon on the new contracts that have been offered to them.

The Shrimpers boss has been very busy this month releasing a number of players from Roots Hall while signing others to new deals.

Steven Clark, Stuart Thurgood and Mark Rawle have all been offered new terms with the Division Three outfit and Wignall will give the trio until next month to make a decision.

"It's a shame because I did let them know nice and early in the hope that they would come back to us with a decision as well, one way or the other, otherwise I will have to wait until June 17 before I can make offers to anyone else to replace them," Wignall told the club's official website.

"It is difficult, and it's difficult for them as well but I would prefer them to perhaps get in touch as soon as possible.

"It is dragging on a little bit and I'd like to finalise those just to clear my mind as to whether they are going to be here or not.

"Come June 17, if these players I have made offers to have not accepted then I can go and get someone else and I will do that if I have to."

Wignall also revealed that he has had talks with an unnamed player's agent over a possible move to the Essex-based club this summer.

"I spoke to someone yesterday, with his agent and we sat and had a good conversation for about an hour," added Wignall.

"It was very favourable, the player wants to come here and his agent wants him to come here.

"He's at another club at the minute, still under contract but there is a possibility that his current club may well release him, if they do then he'll be signing for us in the next few days hopefully."
