Wigan are close to signing Aston Villa youngster Chris Herd on loan and Leeds defender Jason Pearce on a permanent basis, Sky sources understand.

The Lancashire club are keen to bring in new players during the January transfer window and are close to losing winger Callum McManaman to West Bromich Albion.

Herd, a 25-year-old Australia international, has failed to break into Villa’s first-team since he signed in 2000 and has previously spent time on loan at Bolton, Port Vale, Wycombe and Lincoln City.

Pearce, meanwhile, has been allowed to speak to Wigan after Leeds secured a loan for Ivory Coast international defender Sol Bamba from Palermo last week.

Pearce, 27, joined Leeds from Portsmouth in 2012 and has made 23 appearances for the troubled club this season.

Leeds are currently without a chairman after Massimo Cellino was forced to step down from the role for four months after being disqualified by the Football League.
