Leeds are in transfer talks over a new striker - but it is not Luciano Becchio.

The Championship club are discussing a deal for Edgar Cani, an Albania international who plays for Catania in Italy's Serie B.

But owner Massimo Cellino has ruled out re-signing Becchio, who scored 86 goals for Leeds before leaving for Norwich two years ago.

Manager Neil Redfearn had expressed an interest in the Argentine, whose agent this week invited Leeds to approach him about a deal.

But Cellino, quoted in The Sun, said: "We love Becchio and made a big mistake when letting him go, but now it's too late.

"He's not the same player he was three years ago and Leeds is not the same club. He is the past and we are concerned about the future."

Leeds also expect Stephen Warnock's move to Derby to go through as planned despite his recent ankle injury.

Cellino added: "Warnock asked me on Saturday for two more years of contract. I said 'we will see at the end of the year'.

"When a player is 30 they will only get a year-by-year contract - that is my rule.

"He is older, lives in Liverpool and refused to move to Leeds - and is often complaining. So I am happy for him."

Cellino, who presided over 36 managers during 22 years as Cagliari owner, parted company with Brian McDermott soon after taking control at Leeds in April last year and sacked Dave Hockaday and Darko Milanic before installing Redfearn.

"I love Neil and think he is doing his best," Cellino said. "He is not experienced and needs to make mistakes to learn.

"We are building a new culture, a new history and trying to help the players go in a better way.

"Neill is the best coach we could have at the moment."
