Davis hopeful on Murphy future

Crewe boss Steve Davis expects captain Luke Murphy to pen a new contract in the coming days.

Murphy was handed the Alex captaincy following Ashley Westwood's deadline day move to Aston Villa and the 22-year-old is pondering a two-year extension to his time at Gresty Road. "I've spoken to Luke and his agent and that one is obviously on-going," Davis said. "The chairman was away last week so I expect something to happen at the beginning of this week. There's just one or two things to sort out but we're not far away." Westwood made his Villa debut on Saturday, while former Alex protege Nick Powell marked his top-flight bow for Manchester United with a stunning strike to round of a 4-0 win over Wigan. Speaking to his club's official website, Davis added: "It should drive our younger players on to become better players and see themselves in that position. It was a proud moment for the club to see two of our locals lads making their debut in the Premier League and now they have to keep going."
