David Norris: On the verge of joining Leeds United from Pompey

Leeds United have agreed to sign midfielder David Norris from Portsmouth, subject to a medical, the Championship club has confirmed.

The 31-year-old was linked with the Whites last summer before he moved to from Ipswich to Fratton Park and he is now on the verge of a switch to Elland Road.

United manager Neil Warnock believes Norris, who has made more than 400 career appearances, will fit in well at the West Yorkshire side.

"I've always liked him since he was at Plymouth and I've followed him since then," he told the club's official website.

"He has good energy and the way we are at the moment you can't get enough good players in that area. I think he'll fit in well, he'll fight for his place and give us the competition. He'll be another good signing I think.

"He's got a knack for goals. I've already mentioned about Paul Green scoring a few goals this year and it's the same with Norris. I think he has got that in his locker.

"I'm looking for goals from midfield to help us with the loss of Snodgrass. We need to compensate that even though we're looking to sign strikers. That will go a long way to help us with goals from other areas as well."

Interest

A number of clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, were thought to be interested in the experienced midfielder but Warnock was not surprised to see him opt for Leeds.

"I think David always wanted to sign for us," said the boss.

"It was just tying up everything and being able to give him the go-ahead. There's a number of clubs he's spoken to who were hoping and hanging on for him so it's good to put it over the line."

Norris will become Leeds' ninth signing of the summer and the fourth to arrive from Portsmouth, with Jason Pearce, Luke Varney and Jamie Ashdown having already joined.
