McCarthy not worried about Jones running down his contract
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is aware of reports linking him with Portsmouth midfielder Michael Brown but has refused to 'confirm or deny' an interest.
Brown, who turns 34 later this month, could be a target for the Black Country outfit after missing out on Steve Sidwell, who joined Fulham.
The former Tottenham and Wigan player has a clause in his reported £34,000-a-week contract triggering another year at Pompey if he plays one more game.
And with Pompey boss Steve Cotterill admitting the South Coast club will be unable to afford to pay his wages, the news has alerted the Molineux manager, who is seeking a player with Premier League experience.
McCarthy told the
Express & Star: "I'm aware of that. I was interested in Sidwell and I nearly had that deal done.
"So I was looking at that position. But I won't confirm or deny Brown.
"It's really got to be somebody that's played in the Premier League with the spine of the team.
"You might get away with a wide player or a young full-back, but I don't see them around."
No Worry
Meanwhile, McCarthy insists he is not worried about the prospect of David Jones running down his contract.
The 26-year-old midfielder looks set to leave Molineux at the end of the season if he fails to agree a new deal.
McCarthy told the
club's official website: "It's Jonah's prerogative to see his deal out and see what's out there but who's to say he doesn't sign for us next year?
"It's nothing for us to get uptight about and I know Jonah will give his best when he plays.
"There's a feeling that players will pull the rope up behind them and won't do anything about it because they are out of contract but I don't see that in Dave Jones at all.
"He's looking to either hopefully improve the terms of his deal here by playing well or get somewhere else. However he does it, he's got to play well."
