Harte on Inter hit list

IAN HARTE is on Internazionale's short-list of targets to fill their left back slot next term.

The Leeds United defender will go into the World Cup knowing that some impressive performances for Republic of Ireland could seal a lucrative switch to Giuseppe Meazza.

Sources in Milan claim Inter president Massimo Moratti is a big admirer of a player who is extremely useful at set pieces, and often provides a goal threat.

The left back position is a priority for Inter as they consider a summer of spending, following their dramatic failure to capture the Scudetto on the last day of the season.

Hector Cuper will be determined to make amends next season, but his first choice is believed to be Valencia's highly-rated Vicente, whom he knows well from his time in Spain.

Moratti prefers Harte as an option, and has dealt with Leeds in the past when first loaning, then selling, Robbie Keane to the Premiership club.

David O'Leary is in no rush to sell his compatriot, even though the Yorkshire side may have to sell to finance their own close season signings, but, if the bidding from Inter gets as serious as is being claimed, it would be difficult for Leeds to refuse such an offer.

Olivier Dacourt is odds-on favourite to become the first man out of Elland Road during the close season, with Juventus his likely destination, but he may not be the only United man heading for Serie A this summer.
