With just seconds left on the clock Brazilian star Antonio Zago became embroiled in an altercation with Leeds youngster Alan Smith and was sent off by the official.
Push became farce when Candela prodded the referee and was also given his marching orders - easing the ressure on the Leeds side in the closing stages.
A niggly first half saw few clear-cut chances for either side.
The ever-impressive Totti looked dangerous playing in his normal role as a floating striker - operating just behind the front two but often dropping deep into midfield to compete for the ball.
Leeds saw their best chance fall to skilful winger Harry Kewell but his shot was palmed wide by Roma goalkeeper.
But in the second half the match exploded into life.
Harry Kewell broke the deadlock with a powerful drive - after good work from Alfie Haaland through the middle.
The young Australian saw his shot deflected onto the bar by keeper Atonioli, but the ball - willed by a sea of white and yellow - slammed down over the line to the glee of a packed Elland Road.
Roma piled on the pressure as they sought to earn the equaliser that would put them through on away goals, but with Radebe impressive at the back, the Yorkshire side kept their heads when their opposition lost theirs - to progress impressively into a quarter final berth against French side Lens.
Leeds manager David OLeary was understandably delighted with the result saying: ``Nobody thought we`d come this far in the competition but we got about them from the very start. We then got our goal then we closed them down.
" We worked hard and rode our luck over the two games but overall I thought we deserved to win through. I`m just so proud of them as it`s a great, great achievement. We worked hard but nothing comes easily in this game. You`ve got to put everything into it. I said to the players let`s not be talkers, let`s be doers.``
O`Leary believes that his young team can go on to win the tournament - a journey that will start with Slavia Prague in the quarter finals.
``I haven`t seen them play but with hard work and the work rate the players show for each other anything is possible. We have already beaten Spartak Moscow who came from the Champions League and now Roma.``
