Grimsby Town are hoping to agree a deal to re-sign Hull City midfielder Nicky Featherstone on loan.
The 21-year-old's six-week stay at Blundell Park ended after Saturday's 1-1 home draw against Bury and he has returned to Hull to discuss his immediate future.
Mariners boss Neil Woods said: "We've spoken to Hull about Nicky and we'd like him to stay here for longer.
"They want a chat with him this week to see what they want to do, but we are hopeful because he has enjoyed it here.
"If he doesn't come back then it may affect what we look at bringing in. We are working hard, but have to be patient as well.
"We only want players who will improve on what we have here or add to the squad.
"We are always working on things, but it's not as easy to attract players for the obvious reason that we are second bottom of the league."
Featherstone made seven League Two appearances for the Mariners during his time at the club.
