Phil Brown admits Andy Dawson is only '50-50' to return to the Hull City side against Portsmouth on Saturday.
Dawson missed last week's 2-2 draw with Manchester City due to an Achilles injury, having been forced off against Bolton Wanderers the previous week.
The left-back is still fighting to shake off the knock and is doubtful for the Tigers' Premier League trip to Fratton Park this weekend.
"It's a long-standing injury and Andy is only 50-50 for the Portsmouth match," said Brown in the Hull Daily Mail.
"He's gone through the pain barrier a few times for us this season, as he's done throughout his career, and he's still recovering."
Meanwhile, Brown expects defender Anthony Gardner to make his injury comeback for City within the next two weeks.
Gardner has not played since September's 2-1 win at Newcastle United due to thigh problems, but Brown confirmed the former Tottenham stopper is close to a return.
He added: "Saturday's game will be a bridge too far for Anthony.
"We'll be looking two weeks down the line to get Anthony back."
