Hull City midfielder John Welsh has joined League One side Carlisle United on a one-month loan deal.

The 24-year-old began his career with Liverpool and made 10 appearances for the Reds, picking up four England under-21 caps in the process.

Welsh joined the Tigers in the summer of 2005 and has made 54 appearances to date. The midfielder spent a month on loan at Chester City in League Two as he recovered from injury last January.

Welsh joins a Carlisle side who are on a dangerous slide down the League One table. Despite reaching the play-offs last campaign, United have taken just one point from their last eight league games.

Saturday saw Carlisle succumb to their biggest defeat of the season, losing 5-0 away to fellow strugglers Colchester United.

Manager John Ward knows he needs experienced players to steady the ship and he believes Welsh will play a key role.

He said: "John is a holding midfielder who can help to steady things up in the middle of the park.

"I feel that we need a bit more cover in that area at the moment, so I'm pleased that we have been able to get him in to work with us.

"He will be available to play tomorrow night against Hartlepool and we're looking forward to working with him."
