Oldham's bid for promotion from League One has been handed a major fillip with the signing of Sean Gregan.

The 32-year-old recently completed a hugely successful loan spell at Boundary Park, from Leeds, and having been released from the final six months of his Elland Road contract, he has now returned to Oldham.

Gregan has signed a two-and-a-half year deal after productive contractual talks with Latics boss John Sheridan, who persuaded him to drop down a division on a permanent basis.

The former Preston and West Brom favourite was not thought to have been short of suitors but chose Oldham after enjoying his initial spell with the club.

Championship side Hull, along with Doncaster, were also believed to have been keen on the player.

Gregan, who missed Oldham's FA Cup draw with Wolves on Saturday, will likely slot back into Sheridan's starting line-up for this weekend's top-of-the-table clash with Scunthorpe.
