YEOVIL'S first day in the football league proved a roaring success for the Somerset side, as they registered a historic 3-1 victory over Rochdale.

Expectations were high for The Glovers, and they took an early lead through Kevin Gall.

Thoughts of taking the lead into half-time evaporated when Paul Connor levelled for Dale seconds before the break, but the second half saw Lee Johnson restore Yeovil's lead and Gall grab his second to wrap up the scoring.

Another side who plied their trade in the conference last year - Doncaster Rovers - also made a triumphant start with a 3-1 win against Leyton Orient.

Gregg Blundell and a brace from Leo Fortune-West had given Rovers a big lead before Matthew Lockwood grabbed a consolation for Orient from the penalty spot.

Those who favoured Hull City as favourites to lift the Third Division title will not have seen anything to dissuade them, with The Tigers picking up a 4-1 win over Darlington.

Ben Burgess grabbed an opener for Hull, before Barry Conlon levelled.

Jason Price and Alton Thelwell then grabbed goals to establish a cushion before Danny Allsopp wrapped up the scoring.

The Leagues' youngest ever manager Chris Brass had a mixed day - seeing his York City side picking up a 2-1 win away to Carlisle, but also seeing red along with United's Steve Livingstone.

York's Lee Bullock had scored a second minute opener, but saw the lead cancelled out just two minutes later by Paul Raven, before assistant manager Lee Nogan gave York their eventual winner.

Jonathan Stead grabbed a brace for Huddersfield but they could only draw 2-2 with Cambridge, Daniel Chillingworth and Dave Kitson scoring United's goals.

Bo Henriksen also scored a brace in a 2-1 home win for his side Kidderminster over Mansfield with Wayne Corden grabbing the visitor's goal.

Oxford defeated Lincoln 1-0 on their travels courtesy of a goal from Steve Basham, with Simon Yeo sent off for the home side, whilst Macclesfield were held to a 0-0 draw by Boston United.

Northampton were defeated at home by Torquay courtesy of a solitary goal from Jason Fowler.

Former Burnley man Bradley Maylett was the hero for Swansea on his debut, grabbing a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Bury.

Goals from manager Andy Preece and Lee Connell had given Bury hope, but Maylett's hat-trick along with a goal for Lee Trundle handed Swansea an opening day victory.

Adam Barrett and Lee Hodges scored as Bristol Rovers got a 2-1 win against Scunthorpe. A penalty from Peter Beagrie gave the home side scant consolation.

Finally Southend picked up a 2-0 win against Cheltenham courtesy of a Mark Gower brace.
