Poyet and Adkins up for the first manager gong of the season

Gus Poyet and Nigel Adkins are among the nominees for August's Championship Manager of the Month award following flying starts to the season. With Brighton and Southampton respectively having made the transition to life in the second tier with consummate ease, their achievements have been acknowledged accordingly. The Seagulls currently top the table, having dropped just two points in their opening five fixtures. The Saints sit second, with defeat to big-spending Leicester last time out representing the only blot on their copybook. Poyet and Adkins are joined in the running for the first managerial gong of the season by Nigel Clough and Tony Mowbray. Derby boss Clough has overseen the Rams' best start to a league campaign in 106 years, while Middlesbrough chief Mowbray has helped Boro make an unbeaten start.

Player award

One of the stars of the show at the Riverside Stadium has been Marvin Emnes and the Dutch forward, after notching four times in five games, is rewarded with a nomination for Player of the Month. Southampton's Adam Lallana will also be looking to land the prize, having netted three times already this season. Luke Steele is the third nominee, having been in impressive form for Barnsley, and the highlight of his campaign so far was saving two penalties in a 2-1 victory at Reading. The final player up for the August award is Kevin Phillips, with the veteran frontman proving that he still knows the route to goal with four strikes in his first five appearances for Blackpool. The winners of the manager and player awards will be announced this Friday at 10am on Sky Sports News HD.
