Boss recognises the need for reinforcements after drab draw

Steve McClaren plans further activity in the transfer market after a disappointing first game in charge of Nottingham Forest. Forest were held to a 0-0 draw with Barnsley on the opening day of the Championship season, which, for former England boss McClaren, highlighted his need to add to his squad. McClaren told the club's official website: "The 90 minutes just confirmed to us what we already knew - that we need to strengthen the squad before the end of August. "The chairman is fully behind us. The backing is there but it is just about the process of getting the players in. The good thing is that we still have time to do that."

Clean sheet

The former FC Twente coach added: "A lot of what we did was very good and it wasn't the worst of days because we got a point and kept a clean sheet. "The work-rate and attitude of the players was excellent - I couldn't fault that. But it was plain to see that we need more quality in the final third of the field. "But I must confess it was one of those opening-day things, sometimes you just get a bit of an anti-climax. "We got a big crowd in, there was a lot of expectation and we wanted to do well, but it just didn't quite work out for us. "We never looked like getting the moment that would have brought the win but we kept going right until the end and that pleased me very much."
Hill delight
Keith Hill was delighted after seeing Barnsley hold out for a point after a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest. "I'm over the moon with how it went today. Did we create enough opportunities to win the game? Yes we did," said Hill. "I thought the performance was outstanding. Clean sheets do win games and I know the supporters have embraced the way that we are trying to play and the way that we are set up. "We have got players who can score goals, as we have seen in preseason, and we have players who understand their function and to keep clean sheets, and to come here and do that is job done. "I like exciting football and I think we did play exciting football at times bu you have got to acknowledge that Forest are an excellent team with excellent players and I believe they will be successful."
