Barnsley drew with Bournemouth, while Doncaster's game with Brentford ended 0-0.
Barnsley moved up to third but failed to claim an automatic promotion spot after a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.
Victory would have put Andy Ritchie's promotion chasers in second but they failed to hold on to a first half lead given to them by Stephen McPhail.
The former Leeds midfielder struck in the 21st minute but a looping Adam Griffiths header from Steve Foley's corner earned The Cherries a share of the spoils.
Robbie Williams may be on board at Vale Park but he may soon have the odd regret after Scunthorpe won 2-1 at Vale Park.
Matthew Sparrow broke the deadlock for the visitors with an impressive 20 yard effort in only the 11th minute and things went from bad to worse for Martin Foyle's side when Vale's Jason Talbot saw red following a rash tackle on Richard Hinds.
Michael Cummins found an equaliser in the 18th minute before Cleveland Taylor scored another impressive effort from 25-yards to ensure maximum spoils for Brian Laws' travelling Scunthorpe outfit.
Doncaster and Brentford could not find a goal between them as two evenly fought sides played out an entertaining but ultimately goalless stalemate.
