Barnsley are now poised to land Paul Reid after upping their bid for the Northampton Town captain.

The League One side had an undisclosed bid for the defender rejected by Northampton on Tuesday.

The Cobblers confirmed the offer was below their valuation of the 22-year-old and hoped the matter would be laid to rest.

But Barnsley have refused to take 'no' for an answer and have increased their bid for the former Rangers trainee.

The Tykes have acknowledged their improved offer for the Cobblers skipper and are seemingly hell-bent on taking Reid to Oakwell.

Barnsley now hope to wrap up the deal on Wednesday after being granted permission to discuss personal terms with Reid.

Club chairman Peter Ridsdale told Barnsley's website: "We have now been given permission to talk with the player and hope to hold discussions tomorrow."
