Premier League: Leicester defender Matt Upson is nearing the end of injury nightmare

Leicester defender Matt Upson is finally nearing full fitness and could return to action next week.

The experienced defender has been sidelined with a foot injury since joining from Brighton in the summer, but recently joined his Foxes teammates in training.

Upson could be given a run out in Monday’s under-21s match against Benfica, supplying a timely boost for City, who suffered four Premier League defeats in a row.

"Matt is training very well at the moment but hopefully he will play some part of a game next week, possibly," said boss Nigel Pearson. "He is making good progress."

Defensive duo Liam Moore and Wes Morgan withdrew from international duty through illness and a persistent heel injury respectively, but they are expected to be passed fit to face Sunderland on Saturday.

Pearson has urged his players to be sharper at both ends of the pitch as they attempt to stop the rot at the King Power Stadium.

"Liam had an infection which, without going into details, needed medication," said Pearson. "He trained intermittently and is much better now."

"We haven't really looked as though we have struggled too much in terms of keeping teams at bay.

"There are games we have lost because of our inability to keep clean sheets and score goals and those together have put us into a difficult run."
