QPR have handed a trial to long-time Chesterfield target Callum Chettle.

Teenage midfielder Chettle, who plays for the Spireites' non-league neighbours Ilkeston, has been on the radar of Chesterfield chief scout Paul Mitchell for some time and was brought to the attention of previous boss Paul Cook.

Cook's departure to Portsmouth at the end of last season and the subsequent appointment of Dean Saunders disrupted the Sky Bet League 1 club's plans to sign the player.

Meanwhile, Chettle made his debut for the England C team at the beginning of this month, alerting several other clubs to the 18-year-old.

Following relegation from the Premier League, QPR are increasing their emphasis on developing young players and think Chettle could be an asset to their Under-21 team next season.

Despite his age, Chettle has made over 100 first-team appearances for Northern Premier League Premier Division club Ilkeston.
